Next New

I think we should have a new media that creates a virtual device that allows us to shop in stores virtually instead of buying online. Imagine, at home, you can virtually walk around Whole Foods or Macy's in current time and you can browse around and see the details of the clothing or the quality of the produce. This can be a better experience buying online when you order something and it is nothing like the pictures in person. It would also help companies promote new products to the new generation that shop online but don't browse in stores to find new things. You can also make virtual stores not actual. Just a more better way to shop online.

Wiki So Far

So far I have done quite a few contributing to our Wiki page. First, I wanted to add to my username some information I discussed in my term paper about Wikipedia's business model and the podcast show I was motivated by, How I Built This with Guy Raz. On our Wiki I had added NPR to our New Media definition as another brand that brings a new way of sharing information through the internet. I also added that to the New Media and News page which shows how it can be used as a new source. I also included the social media impact on retail stores on our Retail page. I was a nice research on how retailers had to change their business models and strategies because of the relevance of social media. Also, the generational differences of how a business is structured. the newer generation wants to buy from a company that has social value and do more than making money, like teaming with charities. I also made a few quick edits to the Astrology and Privacy pages. Will continue looking...

P2P

What is file sharing? File sharing is defined as “ the practice of or ability to transmit files from one computer to another over a network or the Internet.” Simply speaking it is the sharing of files through the internet, whether it is an image, money or a cloud sharing folder for work. You can share a file with a person, network or an organization. What is P2P File sharing? P2P is Peer-to-peer file sharing where you share a file on a person to person basis. There are some risk associated with using P2P software like identity theft, for example in an article by CNET, “ On February 23, 2009, a Dartmouth College professor published a paper reporting that over a two-week period he was able to search a P2P network and uncover tens of thousands of medical files containing names, addresses, and Social Security numbers for patients seeking treatment for conditions such as AIDS, cancer, and mental health problems.” What are some examples of P2P file sharing? An example o...

Privacy

Privacy and confidentiality are very important issues that new media faces on a daily basis. My paper was on Wikipedia, as part of new media Wiki formats have been very popular and adopted through many organizations. Two problems Wiki faces is exactly the privacy of the information and the user's personal information shared throughout the organization. New media allows companies to store vital information about the firm, customers, and employees. That vital information must be secured because it is easily accessible by hackers. Also, new media allows filesharing throughout the internal organization that must have high confidentiality standards because it can be given to the wrong hand or even intercepted by a third party. Whoever adopts any sort of new media must look into how to protect its privacy and make sure there are no holes in the system.

Advice

If I were hired by Baruch College to use new media in hopes of improving the school, I would develop two aspects that will help several students. One, I would start making educational short, straight to the point, videos on how to perform the essential tasks as a college student. For example, many students do not know how to navigate through CUNYFirst or knowing different resources Baruch offers like SACC tutoring and how to take advantage of it. These videos would be posted on some sort of blogs and made by students so there are a personal voice and connection for students. Second, along with those videos, I would also have a Wiki page that gives the students the ability to share information, news and their opinions on campus-wide situations. It would be a private social media type page with just Baruch students.
